Code inspection

Asking a city inspector to check unsafe conditions in your home.

The general rule

You can report unsafe conditions to your local code or health inspector. Calling the inspector is a common option when a landlord will not make major repairs. Rental homes must generally meet local building codes. Your city guide lists the office to contact.

The rule where you live

Austin

Call Austin 311 or 512-974-2000 to ask for a free city code inspection of your home. You can also report the problem online or on the Austin 3-1-1 app. Your landlord cannot punish you for asking. For 6 months after a repair request or a 311 complaint, the law blocks payback evictions, rent hikes, and service cuts.
