California
If a charity, agency, or relative pays your rent, your landlord must accept it. The payer must sign a short statement that they are not a tenant and are not becoming one. This rule does not force your landlord to sign a contract with a housing assistance program, such as Section 8.

Your landlord cannot refuse rent payments from you or from someone paying for you. Your landlord can limit the payment method to those the lease accepts.
