Where Can I Get Rent Assistance or Eviction Help in Maine?

  • Pine Tree Legal Assistance (PTLA) is a civil legal aid group. It helps with rental housing problems, for example eviction and unsafe housing. It gives advice and represents people who qualify at no cost to them. It has limits on who it can help based on income and assets. Call 207-942-8322.

  • PTLA eviction guides are on ptla.org/fed. They explain the eviction process in Maine. They also cover your rights and responsibilities as a renter and your options for resolving your case. If you have an eviction court date coming up, you can contact PTLA and it may be able to help.

  • Maine Judicial Branch has an eviction page on its website, courts.maine.gov. It says mediation (a meeting where a neutral person helps both sides settle) is available at the court on hearing day at no additional cost. It says a mediator (the neutral person) is available to meet with the landlord and tenant.

  • MaineHousing Eviction Prevention Program is meant to help tenants who may be facing an eviction and the loss of their housing. MaineHousing says it will begin accepting applications September 21, 2026. It says it cannot guarantee that help will be available. For help applying, call Project Home at (207) 274-1240.

  • 211 Maine has a housing page. It covers programs that offer rental assistance (help paying rent). It also covers subsidized housing (rent kept low by a program) and housing vouchers (papers that help pay rent). Dial 211, or text your zip code to 898-211.

  • Maine Human Rights Commission takes complaints from any person who believes they were subjected to unlawful discrimination covered under the Maine Human Rights Act. It has a Housing Intake form. A complaint must be filed within 300 days of the date of discrimination. Call 207.624.6290.
