Legal Aid of North Carolina gives free legal help to low income North Carolinians. It covers housing cases such as evictions, fair housing, and foreclosures (when a lender takes a property because the owner missed payments). It also covers housing discrimination and maintenance disputes. Apply online, or apply by phone from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The North Carolina Human Relations Commission handles fair housing in North Carolina. The State Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to treat people unfairly in housing because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability. The Act also protects families with children.
