Where to Get Help With Rent and Housing in Austin

For questions about your rights or a repair your landlord will not make, start with the Austin Tenants Council. If a condition in your home breaks city code, you can ask the city for a free inspection.

  • Austin Tenants Council, 512-474-1961. Call Monday to Thursday, 9AM to 12PM and 1PM to 4PM. On Friday they answer 9AM to 12PM.

    A trained housing advocate talks through your problem with you. They explain your rights and your landlord's duties under the Texas Property Code.

    They are not lawyers and cannot give legal advice. Call the same number about housing discrimination and say so when you call.

    City of Austin building inspection, 311 or 512-974-CODE. The Austin Tenants Council says the inspection is free. An inspector visits and sends the owner an assessment of the conditions.

    Ask the inspector for a copy of the report. It is proof if you end up in court.
