A shutdown is a lapse in funding for a federal or state agency or tribal government that lasts through an unpaid payday. During a shutdown, your landlord cannot enforce a lease term setting when rent is due. This covers federal, state, and tribal workers. It also covers relatives by blood, marriage, adoption, or other legal process living with the worker. If the shutdown lasts 30 days or more, your landlord can ask a court for relief.

Each extra household member adds up to $135 a month. For 3 people, that is up to $670.
