Where to Get Help With Rent and Housing in New York City

Two free hotlines answer questions from New York City renters. Neither can give you legal advice, but both can refer you to a lawyer. Call as soon as you have a problem, not the week of your court date.

Not legal advice. Every statement below links to its primary source. Read the source before relying on this information. If you need legal help, contact your local legal aid organization.
  • Housing Court Answers, 212-962-4795. They answer Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

They explain Housing Court and how it works. They also refer you to free legal help and to community organisations that handle housing problems.

They do not give you money for back rent. They will refer you to a charity or explain the Human Resources Administration rules.

They also staff information tables in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm. Staten Island is closed. They speak English and Spanish.

  • Met Council on Housing, 212-979-0611. They answer Monday and Wednesday 1:30 to 8pm, and Friday 1:30 to 5pm.

They answer questions about repairs, getting enough heat in winter, eviction threats, leases, and legal rent increases.

The counsellors are trained volunteers, not lawyers. They can explain your rights and refer you to a lawyer, but not advise you on a case.

The line is busiest right when it opens at 1:30 p.m., and Mondays are hardest. Try calling after 4pm. They do not do call backs, so keep trying.
